Odell McLeod

Odell McLeod, the son of the late Lacie and Emma Capers McLeod, was born on April 28, 1920 in Sumter, South Carolina. He was educated in the Linden, New Jersey School System.

He was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church.

In February 1942, Odell was inducted into the United States Army Air Force in Tuskegee, Alabama. He was one of the original members of the now famous "Tuskegee Airmen" which was later called the "99th Fighter Squadron". This squadron was an all Black outfit under the leadership of Colonel Benjamin O. Davis. Their duties were to keep the airplanes mechanically ready to fly. They were called the "Ground Crew". Odell was honorably discharged as a Corporal in November 1945.

He worked for the U.S. Government and the United States Post Office until he retired in 1979.

Odell received the Congressional Gold Medal. He also received the Rahway NAACP Armed Service Award in 2002. He was honored in the Salute to our Heroes presented by United States Senator Frank R. Lautenberg in 2006 and by the Linden, Plainfield, Scotch Plains and Rahway City Councils.

Even though he lived for the present, he loved to talk about his past. He enjoyed spending time with his family, but most of all he loved to bowl. He also loved baseball and football.

Odell McLeod departed this life on Sunday, August 10, 2008 at his Linden home at the age of 88. He was predeceased by four brothers, William McLeod, Fred McLeod, Lacie McLeod, Jr., Edward McDaniels and one sister, Anna Marie McLeod.

He leaves to mourn, his longtime companion, Marjorie Holmes of Linden, NJ; a son, Howard McLeod (Rosetta) of Rahway, NJ; two brothers, Walter McLeod (Mary) of Rahway, NJ and Robert McLeod (Wendy) of Maryland; three sisters, Lacie Slater of Rochester, NY, Ruth Herriott (Elliot) of Maryland and Jessie Dixon (Robert) of Plainfield, NJ; two granddaughters, Zandra Brown (Glyn) of Somerset, NJ and Margarita McLeod-Henderson (Shawn) of Woodbridge, NJ; three great grandchildren, Zamion Brown, Gyniah Brown and Shawn Henderson, Jr. and a host of other relatives and friends.
