Lester "POP" Holmes, Jr. was born on October 13, 1934 in Elizabeth, New Jersey to the late Lester and Elizabeth Holmes. He was raised in Cranford and attended the Cranford School System. He enjoyed being a Boy Scout and was an Eagle Scout with Troop 80. He also loved to swim and dance.
Pop was a devoted family man who opened his heart and home to many. He enjoyed meeting people and making new friends. Pop never met a stranger as he was always ready to show love and give a word of encouragement to those he met.
Taken to the First Baptist Church in Cranford, New Jersey at a very young age, he served many faithful years as a dedicated member and an usher for the church.
In 1955, Lester joined the United States Navy. He served for six years before being honorably discharged in 1961.
Mr. Holmes worked for the Fern Furniture Company for over twenty-five years until they went out of business. He then went to work for Suburban Bus Company in South Jersey for fifteen years. He worked for Vogel Bus Company, Inc. until his health started failing.
Lester met Mary Porter. To this union was born one son, Anthony Holmes, Sr. Along with Tony he raised two daughters, Mary Ann Smith and Dora Jones.
Lester Holmes, Jr. departed this life on Sunday, February 28, 2010 at the VA Hospital in East Orange, New Jersey at the age of 75. He was predeceased by brothers, Melvin, David and Henry and a sister, Ruthie Holmes.
He leaves to cherish fond memories, his son, Anthony and his wife, Joann of Portland, OR; two stepdaughters, Mary Ann Smith of Atlanta, Georgia and Dora Jones and her husband, Robert of Irvington, NJ; two brothers, Bishop Leroy Holmes of Roselle, NJ and his wife, Doris of Goldsboro, NC and Robert Holmes of Cranford, NJ and his wife, Rev. Mamie Hughes of Goldsboro, NC; seven grandchildren, Anthony and Danielle Holmes, Thomas and Tyeasha Carey, DeeNell Fulton, Hope Rutledge and Vashawn Smith; four great grandchildren; two aunts, Ester Raymond and Harriet Donald and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
