Deacon Alfred Harris, Jr., 89 of Linden, died on Thursday, February 25, 2010 in Rahway.

He was born on October 22, 1920 in Miami, Florida, the son of the Late Alfred Charles Harris and Alice Costin Harris. He lived in Virginia, Baltimore, Maryland, and Plainfield, New Jersey for 33 years. He has lived in Linden for 24 years.

He was a World War II Army Veteran.

Deacon Harris was employed by the City of Plainfield Public Works Department as a Repairman for 34 years retiring in 1986. He also worked part-time at Shoprite in North Plainfield for 18 years.

He was a member of the Greater Mt. Moriah Baptist Church where he served on the Deacon Board, Wednesday Night Prayer Band, and Monday Night Bible Class.

He was an active member of the Linden Men's Retirement Club.

He had many interests. He loved working in his vegetable garden at home and was an avid bike rider. Many would see him riding his bicycle throughout the streets of Linden.

On February 25, 2010, Deacon Alfred Harris Jr. was called home to be with the Lord.

Surviving are his wife, Deaconess Pamela R. Harris; sons, Andre Harris of New York; Wayne Harris and Alfred Harris III (Channell) of Salisbury, Maryland; and Terrill Harris of Cambridge, Maryland; daughters, Rose Ann Harris Briscoe and Alisa Harris Whitehead of Baltimore, Maryland; stepson, Keith W. Alston of Rosewell, Georgia; 20 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; adopted grandson Ashton D. Hawkins; special friends, Deacon Phillip Hicks and George Daniels; host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Greater Mt. Moriah Daisy Jenkins Scholarship Fund.
