James Henry Williams departed this life on Tuesday, February 23, 2010 in the Overlook Hospital, Summit, NJ.

He was born on September 30, 1924 to Jasper and Maggie Andrews in Cincinnati, Ohio. He lived in Florida, Asbury Park and Roselle before moving to Cranford, residing there for over 55 years.

Jim as he was known, graduated from the High School of Commerce, NY in June 1942 and then entered the United States Navy, Pacific Theater, where he served at Pearl Harbor, Korea, and Japan, until December 1945 where he received accommodation for valor. He resumed his education by graduating from Union Junior College, Cranford, NJ continuing at Pace Institute, New York, NY and graduating from Newark College of Engineering (NJIT) in June 1958 with a BS, IE Industrial Engineering. He began his employment years by working at Velvogragh Company, NY and ending his career at Thomas & Betts Company, Elizabeth, NJ retiring in December 1992 as manager of Industrial Engineering Department.

For many years Jim was a member of St. Mark's A M E Church, Cranford where he was Treasurer of the Trustee Board, Secretary of the Men's Club, Vice Chairman of the Inspirational Choir and for three years Superintendent of the Church School.

He met and married Thelma Hardy in 1953 and lived in Newark, NJ and moving to Cranford a few years later where he resided until his departure.

Jim actively served his community being the African American on the Cranford Board of Education and also on the life member of the Cranford First Aid Squad where he served for seven years. He was on the Mayor's Advisory Council on Group Relations, Cranford Adult School, Board of Directors, Cranford Chapter, American Red Cross and Cranford Planning Board for six years, chairman, Cranford Juvenile Conference Committee, Secretary of the Union County Planning Board, Board of Trustees of Union Memorial Hospital, Union, NJ. As a public advocate he was coach and mentor to many youth in the community. Jim was active with the local and county Democratic Party and also registered many voters. He received and Outstanding Citizens award from the Citizens for Community Pride of Cranford, NJ, the Cranford Clergy Council's first annual Martin Luther King, Jr. award for Civil and Human Rights. Jim was also an avid golfer and playing in many tournaments throughout the Northeast. In 1992, Jim united with the Fountain Baptist Church and enjoyed the Marriage Enrichment Ministry, the Male Chorus, the Monday Night Bible Content Class and Wednesday noon Bible Study.

Jim was predeceased by his parents and he leave to cherish his memory, his devoted wife of 53 years Thelma Williams; daughter, Donna Williams; cousins Daisy Thomas and Shirley Daniels; Godchildren, Michael Reaves; Kevin Daniels and Adrienne Bishop; sisters-in-laws, brothers-in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends.
