The grand lady, Erma Louise DeLarge, accepted her earthly assignment on March 22, 1928 in Apalachicola, Florida.

She was the daughter of the late James and Elizabeth Fagan Simmons.

Erma left Apalachicola to seek career opportunities in the North and arrived in Long Island, New York in the spring of 1947. Erma completed her education at Morris High School in the Bronx and went on to further her education at New York City College. Since her migration north, she has resided in the Bronx, New York, Brooklyn, New York, and Newark, New Jersey. She finally made Linden, New Jersey her home in 1965.

Erma was employed as an assembly worker at Reed & Conwick Pharmaceutical Company in Kenilworth, New Jersey.

Erma was a member of First Baptist Church in Linden and in her later years, she joined Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in Roselle, New Jersey under the leadership of Rev. Milton A. Byrd, Sr.
Erma was an active member of the International F. & A. M. Masons & Order of Eastern Stars since 1972 and was a member of Sisters of Corinthians #118 in Newark, New Jersey since January 1974. Erma held multiple offices in the Order from Torch Bearer to the Advisor, Supreme Recruit Deputy Council President, Grand Conductress and Worthy Matron of Sisters of Corinthians #118.

Erma had an enormous heart and loved her family and friends dearly. Erma often shared stories, life lessons, and quips to educate, encourage, or just make you laugh. In her former years, she would bake a 4-layer coconut and 3-layer chocolate cakes which became the favorites of many and the most requested.

Erma would like you to know that her work here is done. She departed from her earthly assignment on Friday, March 17, 2017 at Trinitas Regional Medical Center in Elizabeth, New Jersey at the age of 88… her new mission was assigned and she has accepted.

Erma was predeceased by her husband, Deacon Carey DeLarge; son, Timothy Smith; and grandson, Alfred B. Smith, Jr.
She leaves to cherish precious memories, her two sons: Alfred B. Smith and wife, Marine Caroline Smith, and Gregory DeLarge; eight grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and a host of dear relatives and friends.
